Registering Competitors – Best Methods

Registering Shooters with PractiScore

I recommend  registering shooters totally within PractiScore (how I do it).   You can register them in ezWinScore, and export them to PractiScore.  This works fine but has limits in support of walk-in / late arrivals.   The document Using PractiScore with Multiple Squads and Using PractiScore with ezWinScore cover registering shooters with ezWinScore. I don’t do it. Too limiting. I spend about 1 minute in ezWinScore per match, a few days later, when I submit to the USPSA.  And I hope we can remove that requirement in the near future.

A few key technical advantages of PractiScore registration include:

  • registration on multiple devices.
  • registration at any time in the match, even after scoring starts
  • auto-complete suggestion of competitors
  • automatic memory of any competitor that has ever shot a match with you (when you used PractiScore)

So how can we use these advantages to make registration fast, and easy?

NOTE: IT IS IMPORTANT TO DEFINE THE MATCH on a device and SYNC to any used in registration.

Register wtih Multiple Devices

A competitor, to PractiScore, is a name, uspsa # and Division.  So, if Ken Nelson, TY64062, Limited registers on multiple devices, he is the same competitor.  If Ken Nelson, TY64062, Open, registers then he is a re-entry.   Ken Nelsoin, L2101, Open, is an entirely different competitor.  As is Ken Nelson, PENDING, Production.

So, if you have 100 shooters to register during the 1/2 registration period, one easy way to make it quick is to have 2 or 3 devices doing registration.  Then synch them up and start shooting.

Register in the Squads

Similarly, registering competitors once they are squadded and are off in their starting bay can save time. Just hand the squad leader a device that has been synched to the match, and let them enter whoever starts with them.  This saves the time spent squadding in PractiScore. Whoever shows up on the bay, gets added, and done.

Handling Walk-Ins / Late Arrivals

This is simple too. Just add them in where ever they start. And start scoring them. If your devices are moving with your squad, they are good to go at each stage. If devices are staying with the stage, then just add them in again each stage with the same name, uspsa # and division.   To simplify this, if I note a walk-in in a situation where the devices are staying in the bay, I will typiclaly synch with that stages device, and then go ahead and synch with the remaining stages devices, just to save them time.
Shoot Thrus and Squad Skipping

What about folks that aren’t squadding – shooters trying to finish early, or that was granted a reshoot after a ruling?    There is an “All Shooters” squad, with name filtering and sorting.  Just find them in there, and score them.   If they aren’t found, due to being registered on a device that hasn’t been synched yet, just register them again with the same Name, USPSA # and Division. Don’t worry… it will work. (-:    Or time permitting you can synch their registration with the rest of the match devices.
